Designing for communities in Singapore

Sustainability Consulting

Challenge

The DesignSingapore Council wished to design for love and attachment to build communities in Singapore. Quantum focused on designing for active, collaborative communities that are sustainable in the long run.

Approach

We adopted a design-led approach, with the end output clearly focused on visual actionable principles for community organizers and members. To reach this objective, we conducted ethnographic interviews with community members from marginalized groups, created a design principle framework, and iteratively refined the framework with organizers across multiple types of communities.

Through the year, we worked closely with our advisory committee of design experts (architects, urban space designers, and visual designers).

Impact

We designed a handbook with principles with communities to use, storyboard illustrations to bring alive application scenarios, and a playing card game for organizers and members to jointly identify potential areas of work. This was circulated among community organizers, and was particularly relevant to help answer some of their long term challenges.

The handbook is open source for public use and can be accessed here.
